I love this, Emma. And it is the struggle of my life to break through my fear and be authentic, tell the truth, describe it all, as we see it—to take that risk. I wrote a play about Akhmatova, including that scene outside the prison that you mentioned. It always stood out to me as well.
Thanks for this, Lynda! I'm glad there's a play in the world about Akhmatova and that scene. It is so vital and has stayed with me since I first heard it. I learned cyrhillic to be able to read her in the original - I can't understand it, but it's a phonetic language so I can at least hear what it sounds like, and then read the translation... So how can you break through? What helps? What could help?
That is so wonderful about learning Cyrillic. I was studying Russian on DuoLingo while writing it. How to break through...? Keep writing; go where it scares me.
Yes, and you don't have to do it alone. People gather in Brave Space to write the scary stuff (and the regular stuff too). You are welcome to join us! This week Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 12pm ET or Thursday at 7pm ET for End of Play, but you don't have to register for End of Play to join.
